The $400 Shopify app that tanked my conversion rate
I found out last month that a popular upsell app I paid $400 for was actually slowing my store to 4 seconds load time on mobile. I saw it in a GTmetrix report and almost dropped my coffee. I switched to a free lightweight alternative that does one thing instead of fifty and my load time dropped to 1.8 seconds. Has anyone else caught a fancy app doing more harm than good after digging into performance numbers?

The app might not have been the real problem, maybe your images or fonts were already heavy and the app just got blamed for it. Those free lightweight tools often skip important stuff like split testing and order bumps, so you could be leaving real money on the table. Fast load times matter, but not if you traded away actual profit for a speed metric you can't spend.

People really overthink this whole speed thing, huh?

Saw a post last week from a dev who ran speed tests on like 30 different Shopify stores and found most slowdowns were from apps doing way too much in the background. @the_faith, I get what you mean about overthinking, but 4 seconds to 1.8 is a huge jump, not just some vanity metric. That's real time people spend waiting, and it adds up fast on mobile where folks bounce after 3 seconds. River makes a fair point about missing features, but if the app's bloat is killing your numbers, it's worth testing the simple option for a week and comparing revenue before you write it off.
