I swore one bank account was fine for freelancing, now I'm splitting things up
For years, I tossed all my project pay into the same account as my rent money. A messy audit last month showed me how dumb that was, so I set up a separate one just for gig cash. How do you handle your money flow to keep things clean?

Split your accounts to dodge audit nightmares.

I always figured one checking account was fine until my bookkeeper saw last year's mess. Your point about separating business and personal spending is what finally got me organized. It made tax season way less stressful.

But what if you're just a freelancer with a few clients? Use one account and tag expenses in an app. The IRS won't come for coffee buys mixed with invoices. Unless you're moving serious money, it feels like overkill. My cousin did her taxes with one account and was fine. Just keep your receipts organized.

Look, I get where you're coming from, but even small amounts of money can get messy fast. Tagging in an app sounds good until you forget one time or the app crashes. What @jamesc79 said about audits is real, it's not just about the amount of money. Having one clean account for business makes everything so much simpler to prove if you ever need to. It's not overkill, it's just setting up a clear system from the start so you never have to sort through a year of coffee and groceries later.
