My old landlord called me out on my bookkeeping mess
I was chatting with my old landlord from 3 years ago, the one I rented my first office from. He asked how freelancing was going and I mentioned I was still using the same shoebox method for receipts. He laughed and said 'you know you left a pile of them in the closet when you moved out.' That hit different because he was right I never even looked at those papers again. Has anyone else had someone from outside your work life point out a money habit you were ignoring?

That shoebox thing hit too close to home, I still find old receipts from years ago stuffed in my glovebox. Best thing I ever did was snap a photo of each one with my phone the second I got it and toss the paper.

Exactly right about the photo trick. Got a folder on my phone just for receipts now, takes two seconds. Paper copies just turn into junk drawer clutter no matter how organized you think you are.

Oh man that's BRILLIANT. I started doing the photo thing after I bought a rug at a flea market and the guy swore I could return it no questions asked but I lost the receipt two days later. @matthewking is totally right about the glovebox graveyard too. I still find gas station receipts from 2019 in my center console and it makes me irrationally mad every time.
