Pro tip: I picked Upwork over a direct client offer and it taught me something
Last spring I got two offers on the same day. One was a direct email from a guy I knew offering me $400 for a 10 page report. The other was an Upwork invite for $250 but with clear milestones and a contract. I went with Upwork because I was tired of chasing payments. The direct guy flaked after 3 months of back and forth anyway, so I really dodged a bullet. Has anyone else had luck turning down a friend or referral to stick with a platform?

My $350 direct client paid faster than any Upwork gig ever.

Friend of mine landed a $200 client directly through a Facebook group. Paid him in full within 24 hours of sending the invoice. Meanwhile, I've had Upwork clients take two weeks to release a $50 milestone after I already submitted the work. Something about that middleman filter just makes everyone move slower. It's like they forget you're a real person on the other end.
