I wasted $350 on a basic contract template that didn't fit my state's laws

I bought a pre-made freelance contract template from a popular legal site for $350, thinking it would cover me. Turns out it had clauses that don't even work under California law, and I found out after a client pushed back on payment terms. Did anyone else get burned by those generic legal forms that claim to work everywhere?

Same thing happened to me with a different site, paid $200 for a template that straight up ignored California's overtime rules. I ended up scrapping it completely and found Nolo's state-specific books at the library for free. Their guides break down exactly what needs to be in your contract for your state, plus they have sample forms you can adapt. Have you checked if your local small business development center offers free legal clinics? That's where I got the best advice for fixing my payment terms without paying another lawyer.

Nolo books still miss details too, like wage theft protections you need in California.

Did you manage to get a refund from that legal site? I got burned the same way with a $300 template that had a non-compete clause that's basically unenforceable here in California. Those mass-market templates just can't account for every state's specific laws no matter what they claim.
