That simple trademark search ended up taking 6 hours of my Saturday

I needed to check if a business name was already trademarked for a freelance client. I figured it'd be a quick 20 minute thing on the USPTO site. But between figuring out the search codes, sifting through dead applications, and cross referencing state databases, I burned almost a whole afternoon. Has anyone else found a faster way to do preliminary clearance searches without going cross eyed?

Six hours for a name check? That's dedication, not a problem.

...and six hours is still cheaper than getting a cease and desist letter from a lawyer later on, so you probably came out ahead in the long run.

Wait, state databases don't count for federal trademark searches though.
