A client in Phoenix told me my invoices were confusing and I finally fixed them

They sent a message saying 'I can't tell what half these line items are for, it's just a list of dates and numbers.' I was using a basic template that just said 'Design Work' and the hours. I switched to a new system where each entry has a short description, like 'Homepage wireframe revision' or 'Logo concept 3'. It took me a whole afternoon to update my process, but now I get paid two weeks faster on average. Has anyone else had to totally redo their billing because of one piece of feedback?

Yeah, @ray643 gets it. Clear invoices cut down on the back and forth emails asking what things mean. Clients see the value right there on the page. It's not about being fancy, it's about being clear. That clarity removes a hurdle to getting paid.

Wow, I used to think detailed invoices were just extra work. Hearing that it actually speeds up getting paid is a game changer. I'm going to update my own templates this week.

Totally feel you, @ward.diana. I put it off for ages too, but it really does make a difference.

Speeds up getting paid" is a stretch. Clients pay when they want to. A fancy invoice just means more typing for you. I've sent simple ones for years, never had a delay. Sometimes overthinking it is the real extra work.
