Just found out my payment tracking system has been double counting for 2 months
Was balancing my books last night and realized I've been thinking I made about $1,200 more than I actually did. Turns out the free spreadsheet template I grabbed off a blog groups invoices by date instead of by project. Anyone else ever catch a dumb math mistake like this in their own records?

Happened to me a couple years back with a freelance spreadsheet. Built this whole system to track invoice dates and realized later it was counting payments that hadn't cleared yet. Caught it after doing a manual count against bank statements for a quarter. Honestly, the best fix was just ditching the template entirely and using a really simple list with just project name, amount, and date paid. Started checking every three months against my actual bank deposits and that catches everything now. It's annoying but at least you found it now instead of six months from now.

Messed up a similar spreadsheet myself last year. Did you switch to any specific app or just keep it old school with a text file?

Oh yeah, I feel this pain. That template was probably "free" because it came with a free side of accounting disaster. At least you caught it before buying something stupid with money that didn't exist yet.
