Just realized I've been underpricing rush jobs for years...
A client last week needed a 3 page website done in 2 days. I quoted my normal rate plus 20% like always. After pulling two all nighters and missing my other deadlines, I figured out I only made about $12 an hour on that job. Now I charge double for anything under a week turn around plus a non refundable deposit up front. Has anyone else found a good formula for rush pricing that actually works?

$12 an hour after all nighters is brutal, I've been there. Doubling your rate and requiring a non refundable deposit is smart, that protects you from the time waste. I do a flat 50% rush fee now and it works way better than trying to calculate a percentage of my normal rate.

And the best part about a flat fee (instead of the percentage game) is you don't have to do math at 3am when you're half asleep. I learned that the hard way after I quoted someone a "double time" rate and accidentally calculated it off my base rate instead of my overtime rate. Now it's just a set number I can rattle off without thinking, way less room for my tired brain to mess it up.

$12 an hour after pulling all nighters? That's insane, I can't believe people used to get away with paying that little for rush work lmao.
