Small milestone - got my first referral from an old coworker today

I've been freelancing for about 8 months now and last week I got a text from Jen, someone I worked with 3 years ago at that agency downtown. She passed my name along to a friend who needed content writing help. I just signed the contract for a 3 month project at $600 a month. Nothing huge but it felt good knowing she thought of me. Has anyone else had luck with referrals from people you haven't talked to in years?

Got a buddy who ghosted his whole network for like 2 years and then out of nowhere a former manager hit him up with a solid lead. He landed a 6 month retainer just from one text message, totally random. Made me realize how many people actually remember you even when you think they forgot.

Not to be that person but technically your buddy didn't "land" the retainer from one text message. He landed it because of the years of work he already did and the relationship he built with that manager before he ghosted. The text was just the final step in a process that started way earlier. People don't just randomly hand out six month retainers to someone they barely remember.

Oh man, that buddy of yours @matthewking must have made some seriously good coffee or saved that manager from a burning building, because ghosting for two years and landing a six month retainer sounds like winning the lottery without buying a ticket. Reminds me of the time I randomly got a text from a guy I used to play poker with five years ago asking if I could fix his broken outdoor faucet. I said sure, showed up, and he handed me another job on the spot from his neighbor who needed their whole sprinkler system looked at. Funny how this stuff works, almost like the universe just waits for you to stop trying before it throws you a bone.
