I tried automated outreach vs doing it by hand and the winner wasn't even close

Everyone in the SEO groups raves about those automated outreach tools for link building. But after 8 months of testing both sides I gotta say the manual approach absolutely crushed it for me. Last winter I ran a test with a tool called PitchBox on 50 prospects for a client in the HVAC space. Got maybe 3 replies and 1 link. Then I spent 3 weekends hand-picking 50 sites, writing personalized emails to each owner, and following up after 5 days. That got me 12 replies and 7 links. The difference was night and day because people could tell I actually looked at their site. Has anyone else found that the time sink of manual work beats the speed of automation?

Damn, 50 sites by hand in 3 weekends? That's some serious grinding. I'd lose my mind doing that many personalized emails.

Doesn't it feel like EVERYTHING in life is like that now though? People are so used to getting automated messages and generic emails that the moment something feels handmade, it stands out like a sore thumb. I've noticed this with restaurants too - the places where the owner actually comes to your table and remembers your name always win over the ones with the fancy QR code menus and automated ordering systems. Same with small business owners at the farmers market versus the big grocery store chains. That personal touch is like a cheat code for trust. The robots can send a thousand messages but they can't show you actually care. You found the real secret - slow and honest always beats fast and phony in the long run.

Yeah, but @kai_ramirez38 probably has a point though? I tried doing something similar for my side gig once and sent like 12 emails before my brain turned to mush. The thing is, when you actually handwrite something, you can't fake that. People can tell the difference between a template with a name swapped in and something where you actually thought about what to say.
