Unpopular opinion: that free SEO webinar from Austin last month was a total waste of time

I spent two hours watching this online event, hoping for some fresh link-building tactics. The host spent the first hour just talking about his own agency's growth, and the only 'tip' was to 'create great content.' I already knew that. It was so basic, I closed the tab halfway through the second speaker. Has anyone found a webinar or local meetup that actually gave you one actionable strategy you could use right away?

That Austin webinar was such a letdown. I sat through the whole thing and didn't get a single useful link building idea. Abby's right, checking for real client work first is the only way now.

Check if the speaker actually runs a real business with real clients before you sign up. I got burned by a "guru" last year whose whole case study was for a made up company, and the strategy fell apart when I tried it on a real site with real competition. Now I only watch stuff from people who name their actual clients or show real data from their own sites.

Honestly, the "creative writing" comment from ray_burns hit me right in the gut because that's exactly what I dealt with. I started checking for real data from their own sites too, and it's been a game changer. What worked for me was finding someone who actually showed their monthly traffic graphs from their own blog or client projects, not just screenshots of some random dashboard. If they can't show you a real, current URL with actual rankings and revenue numbers, I just assume the whole thing is a sales pitch dressed up as education. Saved me so much time and money once I made that my rule.

Sounds like that guru's best case study was in creative writing.
