Unpopular opinion: I used to think a free portfolio site was fine, but switching to a paid one got me 4 new gigs in 2 months.

For years I just used a free platform for my design work, thinking it looked okay. Then a friend in Chicago pointed out my site loaded slow and looked generic next to others. I spent $120 on a paid plan last quarter, which let me organize projects better and add a contact form. The difference was almost immediate, with 4 serious inquiries coming directly from the site since March. I guess the small fee made my work look more professional. Has anyone else seen a jump after upgrading their basic online presence?

It's like that with a lot of stuff now. You get used to the free version of something and don't see the problems until you try the real thing. I had the same issue with my old email address from my college days. Switching to a proper one with my name just made people reply faster. The small cost acts like a filter, it tells people you're serious before you even talk to them.

Yeah, the part about it looking generic is so true. I moved my photography site from a free host to a basic paid Squarespace plan. Just having my own domain name made clients take me way more seriously. It's the first thing they see before they even look at your work.

My first client doubled after a Squarespace move like yours, @emma_jones.
