Update: A client promised extra pay then backed out after delivery...

I finished a rush job last week because they said they'd add a bonus for the fast turn... Now they're saying it was just part of the original deal. I feel stuck since the work is already done... How do you deal with clients who move the goalposts like this? Any advice on getting what was agreed...

Clairep10 said handshake deals, but verbal promises can get fuzzy in fast paced work. The client may have seen your rush effort as part of the normal job, not a separate bonus. Their budget might have changed, or they just remember the talk differently. Without a written note, it's hard to prove what was really agreed.

Been there... rushed a weekend install once because the client needed it done before a big party. We shook on a bonus for the extra hours. Come payday, they acted like the rush was just part of the original quote. That's why I'm with @david_walker97 now. Even a quick text after you talk saying "Just to confirm the rush fee we discussed is X" covers you. Saves a lot of headaches later when memories get fuzzy.

I used to trust handshake deals until something like this taught me to get it in writing next time.

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way and now I always write things down.
