Update: I stopped using a separate contract for every single project

For years, I wrote a new contract from scratch for each job, thinking it made me look more professional. Last fall, after a project in Austin went sideways over payment terms, I spent $150 on a lawyer to draft a single master service agreement. Now I just attach a one-page statement of work for each new client. It saves me about three hours per project and covers me better. Has anyone else switched to a template and had a client push back on it?

Custom contracts show you actually care about the client's specific needs. A template feels lazy to me.

Templates save time but custom ones build trust.

My friend had a client ask for a custom contract once. She sent her template and said the core terms protect them both, but she could add a line about their specific deliverable. The client actually liked that it was clear and standard. They signed it faster than her old custom ones. She says it filters out people who just want to argue over words.
