Warning: That time I landed a gig next to the produce section
Years ago, I ran into a past client while picking out apples at the supermarket. We got into a deep talk about a new design job right there in the produce aisle (people were giving us weird looks). Back in the day, freelance meant being ready to network anywhere, anytime. Now, with all my meetings on video, those spontaneous moments are gone. I kinda miss the chaos of doing business in public places. That produce section chat led to a six-month contract, which was awesome. It's funny how much has changed, from impromptu pitches to scheduled screenshares. Makes me appreciate the old ways, even with all the awkwardness.

The old ways? I'll take my quiet home office any day.

Oh come on, a home office gets so lonely after a while. Nothing beats actually being around people to solve a problem fast. You miss all the quick chats and reading someone's face when you're just on a screen. That human back and forth is how the good stuff gets built, you know? Don't you ever miss just figuring things out together in person?

It's not really about old versus new ways though. That quick back and forth just solves some problems faster, period. You lose that spark when everything is planned and written down.

Man, a buddy of mine who does logos once ran into a client at a coffee shop. The guy was totally stuck on a design, just spinning his wheels. My friend grabbed a napkin and sketched out three ideas right there at the counter. They figured out the whole direction before their drinks even got cold. That kind of quick fix just doesn't happen in an email chain, you know? Makes you wonder what we lose with all the scheduled calls...
