Last Tuesday was a nightmare of failed handshakes

I spent 7 hours trying to connect a Blackmagic HyperDeck to a new client's network at their office in Austin, and nothing wanted to talk to each other until I swapped out a cheap $15 switch. Has anyone else had a gig where the gear just fought you the whole day?

A buddy of mine had the same issue with a cheap switch, @ben_fisher.

I read this thing online about how some cheap switches actually let power through even when they're off, which is scary. Saw a YouTube teardown where a guy tested a no-name brand and it was still sending voltage to the device even in the off position. That's not a switch doing its job, thats a fire hazard waiting to happen. My buddy had a similar thing with a router that kept frying after a storm, turned out the surge protector was the weak link. Sometimes the cheap gear really is the problem, but other times the safety stuff is just junk.

Sounds like the switch was doing its job and the gear was the real problem.
