Unpopular opinion: Standing desks are overrated for freelance back care

I've been freelancing for five years and tried a pricey standing desk to help my back. Some friends swear by them, saying it stops pain from sitting all day. But I found that taking short walks often works just as well. On the other side, a pal invested in one and says it changed his daily routine, reducing his stiffness. For me, the cost didn't match the benefit. I think we might be buying into a trend without real need. What do you think? Have you seen a big difference with a standing desk, or is it just hype?

yeah I totally get that, I was in the same camp for the longest time. Thought it was just an expensive fad. What changed for me was setting a timer to actually switch between sitting and standing every hour, instead of trying to stand all day. That movement back and forth made a bigger difference for my lower back than just standing still. My old desk made me slump, but now I catch myself and switch positions. It's not the desk itself, it's forcing myself to break up the posture.

I was wrong, @james_chen61's timer idea made me see the benefit.

So do you use your phone timer or something built into the desk? I've been thinking about trying that hourly switch too.
