Finally figured out why my shared office space was driving me crazy

I was renting a desk at a co-working spot in Portland for $350 a month and wondered why I felt so scattered. Last week I realized the issue was the open layout - everyone could see my screen and it broke my focus every 10 minutes. A friend let me try a private room for a day and I finished a week's worth of work in 6 hours. Has anyone else found that paying a bit more for a quiet space is worth it?

Oh man, the screen thing is real. I had a spot where the guy next to me would literally lean over to read my emails. Paid $50 more for a cubicle with walls and it changed everything. Sometimes you just need to not feel like you're on display to get stuff done.

Yeah the leaning over to read emails is rough. I put one of those privacy screen filters on my laptop at my old open desk and it helped a ton without having to move spots. Worth the $30 if you're stuck with an open layout for a while.

My $300 desk had me chatting with the guy next to me about his dog every morning, which somehow turned into a solid networking lead that paid for three months of rent. That forced social pressure kept me accountable too, since disappearing for 45 minutes to scroll my phone felt way more awkward with eyes on my screen. The noise and distraction are real, but I'd argue the casual connections and built-in accountability are worth saving that extra cash for people who actually thrive on structure.
