My Denver sublet almost got me evicted because I didn't read the master lease

I found a great spot through a friend of a friend and moved in, paying cash each month. The building manager caught me after 4 months and showed me the lease clause that said no subletting without written approval. I had to pack up and leave in 48 hours. Has anyone else gotten burned by not checking the original rental agreement first?

Man, that's rough but I gotta side with shanes66 on this one. The main tenant totally set you up to fail by hiding that rule. When you sublet, you're trusting them to be straight about the building's rules. What else did they not tell you?

Gotta be honest, I see it the other way. The person on the master lease is the one who really messed up, not you. They signed a contract they didn't follow and put you in a bad spot. Always ask to see the original lease before you hand over any money, even to a friend.

Actually, the building manager was just doing their job enforcing the rules. Should have asked to see the paperwork yourself.

... and that's exactly what my buddy Frank did when he sublet his place downtown. Signed everything over in good faith, paid first and last, then found out the building had a no-pet policy the day after he moved his golden retriever in. Landlord showed up the next morning with a written warning. Turns out the main tenant had three cats nobody knew about and figured it'd be fine. Frank lost two months rent trying to break the lease and the dog had to stay with his parents for six months. Sometimes you gotta wonder why folks can't just be straight with each other.
