My old mentor told me to never rent a place without a separate office door and I ignored her for 2 years
Back in 2018 my friend Jen who freelanced for 10 years straight told me I needed a room with a door that closes fully if I wanted to keep my sanity. I laughed it off and rented this cheap loft in Portland where my desk was basically in the living room. After 18 months of packing up my laptop every time my roommates wanted to watch TV or have people over I finally got it. Moving into a place with a proper office door saved my focus and my relationships with my roommates. Has anyone else had that one piece of advice they wish they listened to sooner?

Oh man, @casey342 calling it "grit" is generous - I'd call it survival mode with a splash of desperation. Honestly though, typing in a bathroom fan might be the ultimate flex (or the ultimate red flag, depends on how you look at it). Whoever told me a real door was optional clearly never tried to focus with a roommate watching Netflix six feet away.

Crash landed in a similar situation myself. I spent a YEAR trying to write a simple blog post with my desk wedged between the kitchen and the front door. Every single time my roommate came home with groceries I had to shove my laptop under a cushion like I was hiding contraband. The breaking point was when he threw a party and I ended up typing on my phone in the bathroom with the fan on just to finish a deadline. I wish I had listened when someone told me a real door is basically a sanity tax you HAVE to pay.
