Overheard a landlord say 'freelancers just need a desk and wifi' and it got me thinking
They said we don't need extra space for equipment or quiet zones, so is it fair to ask for more than just a single room when we're paying market rent, or are we better off finding other freelancers to share a dedicated live-work setup with?

Burning out in a shoebox" yeah that's exactly how it feels most days.

Honestly, the "just need a desk and wifi" thing drives me nuts. I had a landlord once who looked at my recording gear and multiple monitors and was like "you can fit that in the corner, right?" Like no, I need actual space to set up my equipment without tripping over cables or having my mic pick up the neighbor's dog barking through thin walls. Paying full rent for what's basically a bedroom with a hotspot feels like a scam when you're trying to run a legit business from home. I'd rather split a bigger place with other freelancers who get that you need separate zones for work and sleep, otherwise you're just burning out in a shoebox.

And nobody mentions how impossible it is to get a mortgage when your income looks like freelance chaos to banks.
