I used to think networking events were a waste of time until I went to one in Portland last spring
I spent 2 years avoiding every mixer and meetup thinking it was just awkward small talk, but a random conversation at one about compost bins landed me a $900 monthly contract. Has anyone else had a single real talk at an event totally flip their opinion on networking?

lol a compost bin? thats genuinely the last thing I would've expected to lead to a $900/month deal. makes me wonder what random conversations I've blown off that could've been gold mines.

Man you're totally right, I used to be the same way. I'd skip small talk or casual chats thinking they were wasting my time, especially at events or random meetups. But then I landed a side gig just from talking to someone's dad at a BBQ about his rusty old grill, of all things. Now I try to actually listen when people ramble about whatever, because you never know where a weird connection is hiding.

My buddy @fionat55 actually met his landlord at a networking event he almost skipped. They bonded over hating the same local coffee shop and ended up talking for an hour. He got a great apartment below market rate just from one honest conversation about bad coffee.
