Took me 5 years to realize I was time-tracking wrong the whole time

I used to log every single minute I spent on a project, even bathroom breaks and staring out the window. Then last month I had a client ask why my 10 hour week turned into 18 billed hours and I felt super awkward. My buddy who's been freelancing for a decade told me to just track the actual working time and set a fixed project fee instead. Been doing that for 3 weeks now and my stress is way down. Anyone else figure out a dumb habit way later than you should have?

How do you even decide what the fixed fee should be though?
