Spent a week in Porto and the visa setup for digital nomads is surprisingly smooth

I was checking out Portugal as a possible move and stayed in Porto for seven days. The city has a specific desk at the town hall just for freelancers and remote workers looking to sort their paperwork. They gave me a clear list of needed documents, and the guy said most people get their temporary resident visa sorted in about two months if everything is filed right. The big thing I saw was how many co-working spots have deals with local accountants who know the tax rules for foreigners. Has anyone gone through the full process there and can say how the tax part works out after the first year?

Surprisingly smooth" feels like a low bar for moving countries. I mean, two months just to maybe get a temporary visa sounds like a lot of red tape to me. Maybe it's just me but that doesn't sound like a simple process.

Craig's missing the point a bit. Sean48 is right, two months is nothing. The smooth part is the clear process, not the wait.

Actually, two months is crazy fast for a residency visa (I've done this in other countries). Most places take six months to a year, so Portugal's system is a standout. The "surprisingly smooth" part is about the clear guidance and dedicated help, not the wait time. That wait is just normal government processing anywhere. Having a desk that knows the rules for remote workers is the real win.
