Vent: I moved to Lisbon for the 'digital nomad visa' and my taxes doubled
I packed up my freelance design business last year for Portugal's new visa program. I figured the lower cost of living would be great, but I didn't do enough homework on their tax system for self-employed people. After filing my first year, I owed almost 40% of my income between social security and IRS payments. The paperwork alone took me three full weeks to sort out with a local accountant. Has anyone else been hit with a nasty tax surprise after relocating, and where did you go?

That "three full weeks" of paperwork sounds like my last attempt to do my own taxes.

Yeah I read somewhere that the average person spends like 27 hours a year just on tax prep. It's crazy how much time we lose to forms and fine print. Makes you want to just burn it all and start over.

Honestly, that's not so bad for something that keeps roads and schools running.
