Rag wiping varnish onto chair legs was a game changer
Brushing varnish always made a mess on spindles. I saw someone online using a rag instead. So I gave it a shot on my last project. The varnish goes on thin and even. No more ugly drips or brush marks to fix.

What kind of rag did you use though... an old t-shirt always leaves lint in my finish. Did you have that problem, or did you use a special cloth?

I grabbed a blue microfiber cloth from the auto section at Walmart. It was like three dollars for a two-pack. Zero lint issues, which was a HUGE relief after my t-shirt disasters. I make sure to wash them alone with hot water and no dryer sheets. The difference in the finish is honestly night and day.

Back in my old apartment, I tried using a rag from a torn bath towel. It shed so much fluff that the chair leg looked like it grew a sweater. I spent hours picking off tiny bits before I could redo the finish. Now I use those cheap, lint-free cloths from the hardware store, and it's a total game changer. They absorb just enough varnish to lay down a smooth coat without any drips. It saves me so much time sanding out mistakes.
