My new smartwatch bricked itself during a firmware update last night
Every review said the update was quick, but I spent over 4 hours on a factory reset and support chat just to get it working again. Has anyone else had a simple update go this wrong?

Calling that a simple update is a stretch. A bricked device during a firmware push is a major failure. The reviews probably meant the update itself was quick, not the recovery process. It's a known risk with any firmware, even from good brands. You got unlucky with a bad file or a power hiccup. Four hours is a long time to fix something that should just work.

Yeah, @price.linda is right about the risk, but forcing a recovery mode restart got my tablet back in minutes after a bad update.

Ever try a factory reset before the long recovery process?

Factory reset is the nuclear option, it wipes everything. I only go there if the device is totally frozen or stuck on a logo screen. For a bad update, I'd first try forcing it back into recovery mode and sideloading the firmware again from a computer. Sometimes the download just got corrupted. If that fails, then yeah, factory reset from the recovery menu. Just be ready to lose all your apps and settings.
