PSA: I've been cleaning my phone screen wrong for years
I was at the library last week and saw a guy wipe his phone with a microfiber cloth from his glasses case. I always used my shirt or a paper towel. He said, 'That's just grinding grit into the coating, man.' I tried his method for a week and the smudges are gone, plus the screen feels smoother. Anyone have a better cloth they swear by?

Wait, you used paper towels? That sounds so rough on the screen. I totally get it though, I was using my shirt for ages. @kevinallen has a good point about the cloth being soft enough, I need to check what mine is made of.

My optometrist told me most microfiber cloths are too coarse for modern oleophobic coatings. He gave me a free Zeiss lens cleaning cloth that's way softer. It's the only thing I use now for my phone and glasses.

Yeah the "too coarse" thing really hit home... I was using a cheap microfiber from a glasses kit for years and my phone screen just never felt truly clean after. It makes sense now why the coating wore off so fast. I feel for @miaprice too, the shirt thing is such a habit. I guess we're all just slowly ruining our stuff without knowing. That Zeiss cloth sounds perfect, I need to find one like that.
