Found a 20 year old Craftsman toolbox in my dad's barn last weekend
Got up to my dad's place in Ohio to help clean out the old barn. Found this old Craftsman roller cabinet buried under some hay bales. Dusty and rusty but the drawers still slide smooth. Trying to decide if I should restore it or just use it as is. Anyone else run into old gear that still works better than new stuff?

Oh man, I've got the exact same problem but with my grandpa's old drill press. Thing looks like it survived a war but still drills straighter than my brand new Ryobi. I'm always afraid to clean these old tools up too much because I swear the rust is what holds them together. You'll probably use it as is for ten more years and then your kid will find it and have the same debate.

My grandpa's old lathe has a spot weld that's been holding for fifty years and I swear if I even look at it wrong the whole thing might give up. The thing nobody talks about with these old tools is how the rust actually forms a protective layer over the bare metal underneath. Once you scrub that off you're exposing fresh steel to air and moisture and it'll just rust back even faster than before. I've seen guys use electrolysis to strip everything down to bare metal and then the tool gets surface rust overnight if they don't oil it every single week. That patina is like a natural sealant that's been curing for decades... disturbing it just starts the whole cycle over again.

That patina's basically doing the work of a clear coat at this point, so scrubbing it off is just asking for trouble. A light wire brushing to knock off the loose stuff then a good coat of paste wax is all you really need if the welds are holding. That electrolysis method is great for show pieces but for a working tool you're better off leaving the stable rust alone.
