Stumbled on a stat about garage floor coatings that totally surprised me

I was reading a blog post from a garage builder last week and found out that epoxy floor coatings can last up to 20 years if applied right. I always thought they'd start peeling after 5 or 6 years, but apparently the key is proper prep and a top coat. It got me wondering if that $400 I spent on a cheap DIY kit was worth it, since I skipped the grinding step. Has anyone else tried the professional-grade coatings and seen a big difference?

Honestly, I've seen this play out a ton and it really comes down to the prep work more than the product you pick. If you're only doing a single coat with no primer on raw wood, yeah, 20 years is a dream. But if you sand it down right, clean the surface, and use a high quality primer, a good paint job can last way longer than most people expect. I've got jobs I did over a decade ago that still look solid, and that's with normal wear and tear, not museum conditions. The key is taking your time on the prep, not rushing to get the paint on. Grinding or stripping old layers makes a huge difference, like someone else said. So it's not impossible, just takes more elbow grease than most people want to put in.
