That slatwall system from the big box store is a trap for most garages

Tbh, I see people dropping $400 on those pre-cut slatwall panels and then they can't even hang a shovel without the clips breaking. Spend that cash on a good sheet of plywood and some french cleats instead - has anyone else quit on slatwall after the first season?

Three seasons in with french cleats and zero regrets. Slatwall clips strip out if you look at them wrong, especially the plastic ones from the hardware store. French cleats hold my extension ladder just fine, plus it's easy to move stuff around. Cut a few extra cleats when you build it, saves headaches later.

Honestly, "zero regrets" is a stretch - you'll eventually wanna move something that's too heavy for the cleat height you picked, and then you're either cutting new ones or wishing you'd gone denser. That said, cutting extras upfront like you said is solid advice.

Ngl I'm just picturing someone trying to wrestle a ladder off a stripped plastic slatwall clip and wondering where they went wrong in life. French cleats might not be perfect but at least they don't scream at you when you look at them sideways.
