TIL my garage shelf collapse was caused by a bucket of old paint cans from 2019
Last Saturday I was in my garage looking for my drill (you know, the one that hides behind everything) and I bumped into this rickety shelf I built 3 years ago. Well, the whole thing came crashing down and a bucket of old paint cans from 2019 spilled everywhere. Turns out I had 14 half-empty cans of paint just sitting there, adding like 80 extra pounds to a shelf rated for 50 pounds max. My wife came out and just laughed while I stood there covered in beige latex paint. I spent the whole weekend reorganizing everything and tossing out all those old cans. Has anyone else had a garage shelf fail because you forgot what you stored up there?

Well that makes me feel better about the 12 cans of deck stain currently living on MY questionable shelf.

That thing about the shelf being rated for 50 pounds max hit close to home. I had a similar setup in my basement where I stacked about 30 old issues of National Geographic from 2005 on a wire rack that was clearly not meant for that kind of weight. One afternoon I walked by and the whole shelf just buckled and those magazines slid everywhere. My wife still brings up the time I had a "magazine avalanche" in the basement. Did you end up counting how many paint cans were actually empty versus just crusted over?
