Headed south on I-5 and spotted a fresh crack in the road cut.

That shale layer looks ready to slide onto the shoulder any day now.

Seriously? I drive that stretch all the time and see stuff like that. Those shale layers always look worse than they are once they dry out. The weathering makes them crack and split but it doesn't mean a slide is coming. The road crews keep a pretty close eye on it, and they'd have barriers up already if it was that bad. It's just how that rock looks when it's exposed. Have you noticed other spots like that, or just this one?

Oh man, I used to get so nervous seeing those cracks and think a huge rock slide was coming. But after driving past that same spot for a couple years, I finally noticed it never really changes, just looks scary. You're totally right, it's just the rock drying out and looking worse than it is.

Bet the real problem is poor drainage behind that cut.

My buddy's whole driveway washed out from that exact thing last spring.
