Overheard a coffee shop debate about charging per word vs per hour for freelance writing

I was grabbing a latte in Portland yesterday and two writers were going at it. One said she charges $0.50 per word for blog posts and never looks back. The other swore by $80 an hour because she had a client once demand 16 revisions on a 500 word piece. I get both sides but I lean toward per word because hourly just punishes you for being fast. What do you guys use and why?

Buddy of mine tried hourly once. Client called her every 15 minutes with a question, basically paid for two hours of chit-chat per article.

Oh man, I used to totally be on the "hourly is safer" train but hearing that kinda makes me lean toward per-project pricing now.
