Rant: That one Tuesday where I turned down a $900 gig and took a $150 one instead

I had a choice last week between a well-paying data entry job from a repeat client and a last-minute pet sitting gig for a family whose dog just had surgery, and I picked the cheaper one because the dog needed medicine every 4 hours (which felt more meaningful). Has anyone else taken a pay cut just because the higher-paying job felt soul-crushing or the lower one felt more real?

Data entry from a repeat client" is code for boring. You made the right call.

wait hold on, you're saying boring is a bad thing? boring is literally the best thing that can happen in data entry. boring means the system works, the data is clean, no random columns full of emojis or phone numbers typed as "five five five one two three four". boring means no frantic calls about corrupted files at 11pm. i'd kill for a boring repeat client over the excitement of "oh no the spreadsheet has 47 different date formats and half the cells are merged". boring pays the bills just fine.

47 date formats? That's insane! I'm sitting here trying to picture opening up a file and seeing dates written like "April 5th 2023" and "05-04-23" and "4/5/2023" all in the same column. My brain would just short circuit. You've got way more patience than me, I would've closed that spreadsheet and pretended I never saw it. That's not just "exciting" data entry, that's a whole nightmare situation where nothing matches and you're basically playing detective just to figure out what year something happened. I'd take boring and predictable any day over that chaos.
