Why does nobody talk about how boring safe design has gotten?

I mean, look at magazine layouts from the 80s compared to now. They used wild fonts and crazy color mixes that grabbed you. Now everything is so clean and spaced out it puts me to sleep. Maybe it's just me, but I think playing it safe kills good ideas. Like, old video game box art had painted scenes that told a story. Today's covers are just a character on a plain background. Idk, where's the fun in that? We need to get brave again and use old stuff for inspo.

Wait what, you're so right about the video game covers! I totally forgot they used to have those wild painted scenes that showed you a whole world. Now it's like... here's the guy. Just standing there. Makes me not even want to pick it up.

Did you see that article about how marketing teams prefer safe cover art?

Old game covers did more than show a character they painted a story you could step into. Those scenes hinted at adventure and made you curious about the world inside. Now covers are so plain and safe just a hero posed for a photoshoot. It kills the mystery and doesn't tell you anything about the game's soul. Do you think this shift is because games are marketed more like movies now? Or is it just lazy art direction trying to copy what sells?
