Had to choose between a $400/month HMO and a $250 HDHP last open enrollment. Picked the HMO and regret it hard.

Ngl I thought the higher premium meant better coverage but I've already hit my deductible on this thing and they still nickel and dime me on every visit. My buddy with the HDHP just got an MRI for like $200 after his HSA kicked in. Has anyone else made the switch from HMO to HDHP and actually come out ahead?

Had a buddy switch to HDHP and his HSA covered a surgery that would've bankrupted him on my HMO.

that HSA tax break is the real hero here (plus you keep the leftover money).

My uncle made that switch a few years back and now he's basically a HSA evangelist. He keeps bragging about how his HSA paid for his kid's braces and he got a tax refund on top of it. But then he also had to pay out of pocket for a minor ER visit that wiped out a chunk of his savings. Tbh it sounds like a gamble either way, you just gotta hope you don't get hit with something big before the savings stack up.
