That 'just set up near a window' advice from my cousin wrecked my whole setup

My cousin Ryan, he's an interior designer or whatever, told me three months ago that the best spot for my home office was right next to my big living room window. Said natural light boosts focus and mood. Well, now my $500 monitor has a permanent glare spot that I can't see anything on during afternoon calls. Plus the sun beat down on my laptop so bad it overheated and shut off twice last week. I literally had to buy blackout curtains and a clip-on desk lamp to fix it, which cost me like $80 and now it's basically a cave in here. Nobody ever talks about how unworkable a window setup gets after 2 PM in Texas. Has anyone else fallen for the 'natural light is always better' trap and regretted it?

Man tell me about it, I fell for the exact same thing last summer. My cousin didn't even mention the heat coming through the glass, so my CPU fan sounded like a damn jet engine taking off every afternoon. Ended up taping cardboard over half the window just to get any work done. And the reflection on my screen was so bad I couldn't tell if I was looking at a spreadsheet or a mirror. Spent like an hour adjusting the blinds every 20 minutes before I finally gave up and moved my whole desk to the opposite wall. Natural light's great for taking a picture of your coffee but it's a nightmare for actually getting anything done.

And that's the thing nobody warns you about with these "aesthetic" setups right? We see these pictures online with the desk right in front of a big window and think it looks perfect but real life is just glare and heat and squinting. It's like the whole "natural lighting" trend forgot that people actually need to see their screens not just take photos of their keyboards.

Ended up mounting my monitor arm sideways. Game changer for glare.
