Question about paint sheen for home office walls: matte vs eggshell?
I just redid my home office last week and went with matte paint on the walls because I liked the look. But now after 4 days I notice every little scuff from my chair hitting the wall or my coffee mug brushing against it. My buddy who does interior painting told me matte is terrible for offices because you can't clean it without leaving a spot. He said eggshell is the way to go for any room where you actually move around. Has anyone else run into this issue with matte paint in their workspace? I'm thinking about repainting just one wall to test it out.

@wyattramirez is right about matte being impossible to clean without leaving marks (I learned that one the hard way in my old dining room). But here's something people keep missing - the angle of your lighting changes everything. If you have overhead lights or a desk lamp pointed at the wall, matte actually makes scuffs look way worse because the flat finish catches every bit of light differently around the mark. Eggshell scatters light more evenly so those little bumps and smudges just kind of disappear into the background. I switched half my office to eggshell two months ago and the difference is honestly night and day, especially around where my chair keeps hitting the baseboard. The one-wall test is smart but be ready to just do the whole room because you'll probably want the consistency once you see how much better eggshell holds up.

Dodging coffee mug marks sounds like a full contact sport at this point. Busted my knuckles trying to wipe a scuff off my matte wall last week and ended up with a smear that looks like a ghost tried to high five it. Eggshell's probably your move if you don't want your office to look like a crime scene every time you set a cup down. Those matte walls might look great but they're basically just beautiful dirt magnets waiting to happen.
