Wasted $300 on soundproofing panels that did nothing
Last fall I decided to fix the echo in my home office with those foam soundproofing panels you see online. I spent $300 on Amazon and covered half my wall with them. Turns out they stop sound from bouncing around the room but don't block any noise from coming in or out. My neighbor's leaf blower still came through loud and clear. Has anyone found actual soundproofing that works for under $500?

Ask them what kind of walls you've got - hollow drywall or something solid? Foam panels only kill echo inside the room, they don't add mass to stop sound from passing through. I made that same mistake myself with a $200 pack of egg crate foam, felt dumb after. Did you look into mass loaded vinyl or heavy curtains? Those actually block the sound waves from coming through the wall.

Actually I disagree a bit. I've got 2 inch thick foam panels in my bedroom and they made a huge difference for stopping sound going into the hallway. Not quite the same as blocking all low bass frequencies through a shared wall but for regular talking and TV noise? The foam does more than just echo control.
