Rant: whole week went down the drain after a coffee spill

Tuesday I finally got my desk exactly how I wanted it, cables managed, dual monitors perfectly aligned. Then my cat knocked a full mug of coffee right onto my keyboard and surge protector, killing both in seconds. Now I'm typing on a laptop propped on a book, how do you guys actually protect your setup from pets and drinks? It's been a nightmare trying to get back to normal.

Haha, I feel this so hard. The_faith's tip about a waterproof cover is genius actually, I've been living in fear of my cat doing the same thing. I went full paranoid after my own disaster last month and now I keep my coffee in a thermos with a locking lid, plus I tuck all the cords under a heavy desk mat so they can't get pulled. Maybe I should just get a pet gate for my desk area like a lunatic, or learn to type with one hand while holding my mug in the other. What's your cat's name, the little monster?

Three times now I've had electronics die from liquid damage, and every single time it was my own clumsiness or a pet, not a factory defect. Last year I lost a brand new mechanical keyboard because my dog bumped my elbow while I was drinking iced tea. What I finally did was get a simple waterproof keyboard cover that fits over the whole thing, costs about 12 bucks, and a plastic tray under my monitor stand to catch any spills. For the surge protector, I just moved it up onto the desk instead of leaving it on the floor where it could get splashed. It's not pretty but it works, and I've saved myself a lot of money since.
