A client in Atlanta told me my invoices were too confusing and I fixed it

I had this small business owner I was doing some basic web updates for. She paid me $200 a month but always took like 3 weeks to pay. I asked her why and she said my invoices were a mess. She told me she had to hunt around for what the actual charge was for each time. So I changed my system. Now every invoice has just three lines: service description, hours or flat fee, and total. I also put the due date in bold at the top. After I made that switch she started paying within a week every time. Anyone else get a hard but useful comment from a client that made you rethink your paperwork?

Oh man, I had basically the exact same thing happen with a freelance client I used to work with. She straight up told me my invoices looked like a "treasure map" lol, which stung but she was right. I stripped everything down to just the date, a one sentence description of the work, and the total. I also started sending a quick reminder text two days before the due date. She went from paying 30 days late to paying within a week, just like yours did. It's wild how much a little clarity speeds things up.

Man, detailed invoices helped me catch a double charge once.

Totally agree with all of this. I had a landlord once who ran a small property management company and she basically told me my invoices looked like I was trying to hide things. That was a huge wake up call. I used to list every single little thing I did with the time for each one and it was a mess. Now I just put a simple line like "monthly content updates" or "site maintenance" and the flat fee. I also started sending the invoice as a PDF right in the email body instead of making people download it. Getting that feedback was honestly the best thing for my business. It made me realize clients are busy and they just want the simple answer.
