Paid $150 for a currency converter tool and it saved me from a $600 mistake on a UK payment

I had a client in London pay me in pounds and my bank was giving me a terrible rate so I bought Wise after a colleague recommended it and that $150 fee got me a 3.5% better exchange on a 15k deal, has anyone else tried using something besides PayPal for international transfers?

Wise has been a lifesaver for me too... my bank was charging me like 4% on top of a bad rate and I didn't even realize it until I ran the numbers. I started using Wise about a year ago for my freelance payments from Europe and the difference was pretty big, saved a couple hundred on each transfer. The fee stings at first but it pays for itself fast when you're moving real money.

The thing about hidden bank fees that people miss is how they mess with your taxes. When I started using Wise for my freelance income, my accountant pointed out that those random bank fees made tracking my actual earnings a nightmare. With Wise, the fee is right there upfront, so I can show exactly what I paid to convert the money and what I actually received. That clarity saved me from a headache during tax season when the IRS asked about my foreign income. Banks don't make it easy to prove what you paid in fees, but Wise gives you a clean record. So beyond just saving money, it's worth it for the paper trail alone.
