Serious question, does anyone actually use those fancy network diagrams?

I spent 3 years thinking detailed network maps were just for big enterprise clients, until a server crash last month at a dental office revealed I had zero documentation. Drawing out their VLAN setup in about 20 minutes with draw.io helped me fix the issue in 2 hours instead of a full day. Anybody else skip the diagrams and regret it later?

Diagrams are like cheat codes for your future self. People skip them because they think they'll remember the setup, but brains are terrible at storing that kind of detail after a few months. The real value isn't even the troubleshooting part, it's being able to hand a map to a new person or a client without having to explain everything from scratch. Plus, drawing one out forces you to actually understand your own network instead of just knowing it works. Invest the 20 minutes, save the whole day later.

Buddy of mine spent three hours on a Sunday fixing something that would've taken twenty minutes if he'd just drawn a diagram first.

Tbh I feel that. There's nothing worse than staring at something for hours wishing you'd just grabbed a pen.
