Vent: Power went out at 2am while I was wrapping up a final edit
Was just putting the finishing touches on a video edit for a client in Seattle, deadline was 8am their time. Boom, whole block goes dark. No backup battery for my desktop. Lost about 30 minutes of unsaved work. Had to finish the rest on my phone hotspot in the car. Anyone else got a backup plan that actually works for late night blackouts?

Realize most desktops have auto save these days. Check your software settings.

yeah i actually read somewhere that most of the big editing programs like premiere and davinci have autosave baked in now but it defaults to like every 15 minutes or something. i had a friend who lost a whole afternoon of work because he never checked the interval time and thought it was saving every 5 minutes but it wasn't. so if you mess with the settings you can set it to save every minute or two and it barely slows things down. maybe it's just me but i'd rather have a few extra files than risk losing anything.

I mean "had to finish the rest on my phone hotspot in the car" sounds a little dramatic for a video edit. Is it really that serious? Unless it was some kind of million dollar ad, missing a deadline by a few hours isn't the end of the world. Most clients are pretty understanding if you just shoot them a heads up and explain what happened. I feel like people act like the world ends when they lose 30 minutes of work and honestly it's just part of the job sometimes.
