My LLC filing felt pointless until I had to use it last month after a client in Denver tried to stiff me on a $4,200 job

Watching the threat of a formal demand letter instantly flip that client from ignoring me to setting up a payment plan made me realize registering properly wasn't just paperwork, it was actual leverage.

Bought my LLC before I even had my first real client, felt like a sucker paying for pieces of paper. Then a guy in Aurora ghosted me on a $3,800 patio job last summer, same thing happened. One letter from my lawyer on LLC letterhead and he was suddenly texting me about payment plans and apologizing. That piece of paper made me real to him, not just some guy with a truck and a shovel. Made all the time I spent on the paperwork worth it in one phone call.

I read that LLC paperwork pays for itself the first time you need to enforce a contract.

Wonder how many people got burned paying for that LLC before they even knew if their business would work. You got lucky that one threat letter did the trick, but not everybody's deadbeat client is scared of a fancy letterhead. Some of those guys know the legal system moves slow and costs more than you'll ever collect, so that letter might as well be toilet paper. Plus there's all those annual fees and extra taxes you pay just to keep the thing alive. Would've been smarter to wait until you actually needed it instead of gambling on a piece of paper right out the gate.
