Overheard a senior partner say 'we don't do discovery for under $5k'

I was at a coffee shop near the courthouse downtown last Tuesday and caught two lawyers talking at the next table. One said their firm won't even look at a case unless the client can drop $5k just for the initial fact-finding phase. It got me thinking about how smaller shops like mine could actually win clients by offering a flat rate discovery package around $500-800. Has anyone else seen a gap in the market for budget-friendly legal research services?

Used to roll my eyes at the idea of budget discovery packages because I figured you get what you pay for, but seeing those $5k minimums out there really changed my mind. Now I think the gap for smaller price points is totally real (as long as you keep the scope clear so nobody feels cheated).

Wait, $5k just for discovery? That can't be real.

My buddy Aaron paid $5,200 for discovery and got nothing useful out of it.
