That week in Medellín where every coffee shop wifi went down...

Last Tuesday I had 4 back-to-back calls and the internet at three different spots in El Poblado just kept dropping, ended up taking a $25 taxi to a co-work space near Estadio that had a backup fiber line... has anyone else had to build a 'emergency signal' backup plan with a local SIM or something?

Tried a local Claro SIM for backup? In Colombia it saved my bacon more than once. Just grab a prepaid chip at any Exito and keep it loaded with a small data plan.

Yeah my buddy tried that exact thing in Peru and it worked great until his phone died halfway through a hike. He had the Claro SIM with a small data plan and was using it for maps, but his battery crapped out right when he needed directions back to town. He ended up having to ask a random farmer for a ride. Now he carries a power bank everywhere. Your mileage may vary on the battery life thing but the SIM itself is solid.

Yeah I read somewhere that Claro has solid coverage in a lot of South America but battery drain is a real issue with those prepaid SIMs 'cause they keep searching for signal in the mountains. Your buddy's story makes me want to grab a power bank too, sounds like a total lifesaver.
