My uncle's moving tip about box sizes saved me $60

When I was packing for my move from Austin to Dallas last month, my uncle told me to stop using those big moving boxes for everything. He said stick to small and medium boxes for heavy stuff like books and dishes. I thought he was being lazy but I tried it anyway. Turns out he was right - with the big boxes I would have needed two guys to lift them. Ended up fitting everything in my SUV and saved $60 on extra mover fees. The small boxes stack way easier too. Anyone else got a tip from a relative that actually worked?

Big boxes are actually better because you can consolidate everything into fewer trips. That $60 you saved is great but what about the extra time spent packing and unpacking a million tiny boxes? I'd rather pay movers a bit more and get it over with in half the time. And honestly, those small boxes get crushed under the weight of the big ones when you stack them in a truck, so you end up with broken stuff anyway.

Ugh, I totally get what you're saying (and I feel your pain). The stacking thing is real - I had a whole box of dishes get pancaked under some "helpful" mover's stack of heavy bins. It's such a bummer when you're trying to save a buck and it backfires. I've had those small boxes work fine for books and kitchen stuff, but yeah, they're no match for a giant box of clothes on top. At some point, you just want the whole thing done and not have to babysit every single box.

Small boxes for heavy stuff is probably the best moving advice anyone can give you. My dad told me the same thing when I moved apartments and I didn't bust my back lifting boxes of books. Saves you money on movers and your body from hurting later.
